- A dedicated bench or bay that stays in place: use stationary extraction systems. They give steady extraction at one workstation.
- Several workstations feeding into one system: use central extraction systems. They connect multiple extraction points to a single filtration unit, which can simplify filter maintenance across a larger facility.
- Work that needs very close capture, such as torch-integrated extraction at the arc: use high-vacuum extraction. It is built for precise, source-based collection.
- Facility-wide air quality that supports point-of-use extraction: use general ventilation systems. They manage background contaminant levels across the workspace.
Source Capture and General Ventilation Usually Work TogetherÂ
Most shops do not need to choose one strategy over the other. Source capture systems, whether mobile, stationary, central, or high-vacuum, remove fumes close to where they form. General ventilation systems handle contaminants that spread into the wider workspace. Many shops use both.
Confirm the Fit for Your FacilityÂ
Once you narrow down a system category, check the duty cycle, filter type, and how the unit fits your workflow. A system can handle your welding process well and still be a poor fit for your floor plan or staffing.
Think about who will maintain the system. A welder can service a mobile unit alone. A central system supporting a full production line needs more support.
